Bypass opposed

Residents and leaders of various organisations took out a procession, staged ‘rasta roko' and held a public meeting against the proposed bypass for NH 17 at Padubidri in Udupi district on Tuesday.

They demanded a flyover to be constructed instead of the bypass.

The protestors said that theproposed bypass would affect the residential areas of Padubidri. A majority of the people living in this area were from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, they said.

They said the move was taken to safeguard the interests of some influential persons.
