Murder accused arrested

In a major breakthrough, the police have rearrested a 40-year-old man, accused of brutally murdering an 18-year-old girl inside her house near Kumbla in 2006.

Ummer Byari, hailing from Belthangady, was rearrested from Nasik in Maharashtra by a police team deputed by Kasaragod Deputy Superintendent of Police T.P. Renjith on Thursday. Ummer had absconded after getting bail in the murder case from the Kerala High Court, Mr. Renjith said.

Ummer, who was working as a government contractor in Nasik, was being brought here by the police team, which arrested him after verifying the details of calls made to his wife’s cell phone, he said. Mr. Renjith said the girl, Fatimat Suhra of Uluvar, near Kumbla, had refused the plea of Ummer, who was married, to enter into a relationship with him.

Infuriated by the girl’s refusal, Ummer, who was working on the premises of a nearby mosque, climbed a coconut tree and lifting the roof tiles of the house, entered Fatimat’s room early in the morning on December 28, 2006. He slashed her throat and escaped even as her mother and younger sister slept in another room.

He was arrested the next day by a team led by Mr. Renjith, who was then posted as Kumbla circle inspector.
