April 13, 2010 04:05 pm | Updated 04:13 pm IST - MANGALORE:

Principal Secretary of the State Department of Transport M.K. Shankaralinge Gowda has called upon tourism promoters in Dakshina Kannada to have a brand ambassador to attract tourists to the region.

Speaking after inaugurating the Mangalore Association of Travel Agents here on Friday he said that a person hailing from the district and who is known in the country for excellence in any field could be roped in to become the brand ambassador. “There are many persons from this region who have earned names at the national level in different sectors, including cinema. One of them can become the brand ambassador,” he said. Mr. Gowda suggested the association members to organise tourism fairs and other events here to market the region and invite the brand ambassador to such events to showcase the tourism potential of the region.

A handbook of hotels with all basic information about the region should be prepared for the tourists. The association should join hands with Karnataka Tourists and Travel Federation to draw tourists to the region, he said.

He said that the infrastructure facilities in the district were at a satisfactory level. The need of the hour was to market the region's tourism potential, he said. Deputy Director (administration) of the State Tourism Department K.S. Shivalingappa spoke.
