Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies Sharanabasappa told the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat on Saturday that ration cards were being issued to below poverty line (BPL) families even if they did not possess residential proof.
Replying to questions raised by members, he said the BPL families had to give it in writing that they were not in possession of the documents such as tax-paid receipt.
He said that already several families that did not have the documents had been issued ration cards.
Although around 7,000 BPL cards had been suspended because of lack of documents, over 5,000 families had been issued ration cards now. Members said the families were suffering in the absence of ration cards.
Mr. Sharanabasappa said that more than 43,000 people had applied for ration cards online in the district.
Issuing ration cards to them would begin soon, he said.
