The body of a woman, reported missing on Saturday, was found in a well near her house in Huri village, Puttur taluk on Sunday morning. According to Puttur Rural police, the family of Vatsala Rai (54) had reported that she had not returned home since Friday evening. The police are yet to determine if it was accidental death or a deliberate jump into the well.
In another incident, a badly decomposed body of a man washed ashore near Panambur on Sunday morning. The unidentified man was described by the Panambur police as being between 55 to 60 years of age, wearing a blue dhoti and a white shirt. No identity card was found on the body.
Chain snatching
Two instances of chain snatching were reported in the district since Saturday.
Around 8.15 p.m. on Saturday, two unidentified men in monkey caps snatched gold necklace, rings and bangles worth Rs. 60,000 from Beena Miskith (22) at Kollamankur near Moodbidri. Ms. Beena got off the moped she was on as some stones obstructed the road. At that moment, a masked man threatened her with a knife, another took off the gold, and a third man on a bike helped them get away, said the Moodbidri police.
A police official said the gang had struck in at least three other places around Moodbidri recently. However, no arrest has been made so far.
Later, around 4 p.m. on Sunday, a gold necklace, estimated to be worth Rs. 1 lakh, was snatched from a woman in Kulya village in Puttur taluk. According to Puttur Rural police, Sujatha was walking towards her house when two unidentified men – both wearing helmets, and on a black motorbike – snatched her chain and rode away.
Woman kills self
A 32-year-old woman in Budoli village, Bantwal taluk, committed suicide Saturday night, allegedly due to family discord. According to the Bantwal police, Revati, who had recently married a man living in the Middle East, jumped into a stream near her mother’s house around 10 p.m. on Saturday. Ms. Revati was asked to leave her in-law’s house in the absence of her husband. The complaint, filed by her father, states that Ms. Revati “looked” troubled.
The Tahsildhar is carrying out investigations to ascertain if there was dowry harassment in the case.
Man held for assault
A man was arrested on Sunday for assaulting a KSRTC bus driver at Savanoor village, Puttur taluk, for splashing muck on him Saturday. Mohammad Shabir stopped the KSRTC bus – headed from Puttur to Balagod – and threw a stone at B. Shekar (49), after the bus splashed muck on Shabir who was standing by the road, the Kadaba police said.
