Widening of roads, time-bound construction of the Malpe-Padukere bridge and strengthening underground drainage system are the key promises made in the manifesto released on Friday by the Bharatiya Janata Party for the Udupi City Municipal Council election.
The manifesto promises to convert the road connecting Adiudupi and Malpe Beach into four-lane at a cost of Rs. 24 crore. Similarly, the two-lane Manipal-Parkala-Athrady Road would be converted into a four-lane. The land acquisition for this road was underway, the manifesto said.
The Taluk Office-Korangarapady Road would also be widened. A 100-feet road would be constructed from Syndicate Circle to the District Offices Complex and named after the late former Minister V.S. Acharya.
The BJP also promises to lay a new road from Manipal Post Office to the Manipal Industrial Area. The MGM College-Budnar-Diana Theatre Road would be upgraded if the party came back to power.
Construction of the Malpe-Padukere Bridge, the foundation stone for which was laid recently, would be completed within a year. The underground drainage system would be strengthened from Manipal, Santhekatte, Kallianpur and Adiudupi to Malpe, according to the manifesto. Other promises made by the party include: construction of a four-storey parking complex to ease traffic problem, a bridge-cum-dam from Mooduperampalli to Kolalgiri over the Swarna River with financial help from the State government, providing basic facilities for tourists, renovation of Bhujanga Park, developing existing parks at Malpe, Santhekatte, Bailoor, and Manipal, construction of a cricket ground and an open air theatre at Beedinagudde, and setting aside Rs. 30 lakh to draw up new plans for the welfare of persons with disabilities. The manifesto also promises to set up a 24-hour helpline at the CMC office.
