The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha criticised the State government’s proposed Bill on superstitious practices to be tabled in the House during the winter session of the legislature in Belgaum.
They also took exception to the government’s proposal to have only Muslim brides as beneficiaries of the Shaadi Bhagya scheme.
Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, president of the Dakshina Kannada BJP unit, Pratap Simha Nayak, said that it exposed “the mindset of the Congress of not respecting the feelings of the majority and look down them upon as second class citizens”.
Mr. Nayak said that there was difference between beliefs and practices. The move of the government, according to media reports, indicated that it was attempting to question the “moola nambike” (beliefs deep rooted for generations) in the name of “mooda nambike” (superstition).
Mr. Nayak said though he had not read the draft of the Bill, according to media reports, terming “paada puja” of swamis and wearing ‘rudrakshi maala” as superstition was not correct.
