December 02, 2011 11:40 am | Updated November 17, 2021 07:18 am IST - Udupi:

Residents of Bavalikudru village blocked the road for an hour to protest against sand mining and transportation of sand on Tuesday.

Udupi tahsildar V. Prasanna told The Hindu that 100 people from the village had blocked the road with stones and did not allow any movement of vehicles from 9.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.

They were opposed to the mining of sand from the Swarna river near their village and its transportation to other places.

They complained that the vehicles carrying the sand were destroying the narrow roads and affecting their routine work.

After Mr. Prasanna and MLA Raghupati Bhat visited the spot on Tuesday, the people of the village said they would clear the road only if the sand mining and its transportation was stopped.

After negotiating with the people of the village, the road was thrown open to traffic.
