The State government will set up a high security prison in 100 acres of land available in Bantwal, Home Minister K.J. George said.
Replying to an unstarred question by MLC Ivan D’Souza, Mr. George said in the Legislative Council on Thursday that the high security prison will come up in the land available in Kurnad and Chelyar in Bantwal taluk.
While the department was in possession of 63 acres of land, procedure has been initiated to take possession of 41 acres of land presently with the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board.
Mr. George said that as on June 30 there were 373 inmates in the new Mangalore District prison that was built to accommodate 200 persons. The old block of the prison was being readied to house inmates known to create problems.
No hike in remunerationTo another unstarred question by Mr. D’Souza, Urban Development Minister Vinaykumar Sorake said there was no proposal to increase the monthly remuneration paid to Mayor and other elected councillors of Mahanagara Palike. Mayor was receiving a monthly remuneration of Rs. 8,000, while Deputy Mayor and other members were receiving Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 3,000 per month respectively, Mr. Sorake said.
