Bank employees to strike work in September

August 23, 2010 08:33 pm | Updated 08:33 pm IST - MANGALORE:

Many recommendations of the Khandelwal Committee report are against the interests of employees and officers of the banking industry, D.D. Rustagi, general secretary, Canara Bank Employees' Union (CBEU) and joint secretary of the All-India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA) said here on Sunday.

Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of the seventh State conference of the CBEU here, Mr. Rustagi said that the union opposed “all negative recommendations” of the report.

He criticised the suggestion made in the report to phase out permanent jobs such as those of clerks, and came down heavily on the practice of hiring staff on contract basis.

Although officers were not yet employed on contract, the lower level employees of banks, especially in the private sector, were being recruited on contract basis, he said.

Mr. Rustagi said that the AIBEA, which has 5 lakh members, would support the call given by central trade unions to strike work on September 7.
