The Bellary Nagarika Horata Samiti has expressed concern over the alleged failure of the authorities concerned in addressing the growing civic problems in the city.
“The claim of developing Bellary into a beautiful city, besides keeping it clean and green, has turned out to be limited to attracting publicity,” the samiti alleged.
R. Somashekar Goud, convener of the samiti, and G. Rudrappa, B. Hemanagouda and G.M. Veerbhadraiah, members, in a press release here on Saturday, listed out the civic problems like unhygienic conditions, choked and overflowing drains and delay in laying roads.
The samiti has accused the city corporation, which recently introduced the door-to-door collection of garbage, of not initiating any steps to clear garbage from roadsides. “The garbage on the roadsides is not cleared for several weeks. They try to burn it which has compounded the problem of polllution, besides causing health hazards,” they said. Foul smell filled the air in most of the areas as there were no public urinals. The choked drains only worsened the situation. Flooding of low-lying areas even after a light drizzle was common since the construction of storm-water drains and vents was improper, they said.
Earlier, meetings to address public grievances were convened regularly when the Deputy Commissioner was conducting them. However, since the Department of Food and Civil Supplies was entrusted with the task, the meetings were irregular and the issues raised by the people were not addressed promptly, the members said.
