A 50-year-old astrologer, who teaches the Vedas in a temple in Vitla, has been accused of beating a 10-year-old boy for sitting on a chair meant for erstwhile chieftains of Vitla in the temple.

In a complaint, Seshappa, a resident of Vitla, said that the boy, studying in Class 3, was among a few students to whom Shyam Sundara Shastry taught the Vedas at the Panchalingeshwara temple in April. Once, the boy was seen sitting on the chair reserved for erstwhile chieftains of Vitla. The boy was reportedly beaten for doing so.

The complainant said that he was pained to view the footage of the assault that he had received on his mobile phone though social media. The complainant has mentioned that the boy, who was assaulted, had suffered fracture in his right hand a few weeks before the assault.

Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D. said that the complaint was filed before him on Thursday and it had been registered by the Vitla police. The accused Shyam Sundara Shastry has been charged under Sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (insult intended to provoke breach of peace).
