Superintendent of Police Labhu Ram has ordered an inquiry into allegations of rape and harassment made against a police constable attached to the Kadaba police station in Puttur taluk.
Mr. Ram ordered the inquiry during the monthly vigilance committee meeting under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 held here on Sunday.
At the meeting, a woman from Puttur taluk levelled allegations of rape and harassment against the constable, and said that she was led to believe that he was unmarried.
The woman had previously lodged a complaint in this regard with the circle inspector but even as the inquiry was going on, she filed a complaint with him, Mr. Ram said. The inquiry revealed that the family members of the woman denied the allegations made by her, Mr. Ram said. They had told the inquiring officer that they knew that the constable had been married and claimed that the constable was a distant relative whom they turned to for help.
He had ordered another inquiry by Assistant Superintendent of Police (Puttur) as the woman had brought up the matter again.
