The memorandum urged the Government to provide Rs. 3,000 as monthly pension to beedi workers

Beedi workers associated with the South Kanara Beedi Workers’ Federation staged a protest in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Thursday urging the Government to fulfil their demands.

In a memorandum to the Labour Minister submitted through the Deputy Commissioner, president of the federation P. Sanjeeva said the Government proposed to stop providing scholarships to children of beedi workers from class I to VIII as those aged up to 14 were getting free education. If the Government implemented the proposal, it would affect many children as beedi workers had to take care of other needs of children.

They demanded that the proposal be dropped.

The memorandum urged the Government to provide Rs. 3,000 as monthly pension to beedi workers. It should issue smart cards to beedi workers who had registered under Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, it said.
