The family members had appealed to producer and actor Namrata Hegde and actors Aravind Bolar, Thamma Lakshman to change the name.

The name of the latest Tulu film under production has been changed from “Raampa” to “Sompa”, following objections from the family of Ramappa Poojary, hotelier, after whom the name “Raampa” is associated.

A team involved in the production of the film and a member of the family of Poojary announced this at a press conference on Friday. The name had been changed following an objection from members of the family that Poojary was being brought into ridicule owing to the association of the name, “Raampa”, to jokes doing rounds in the region.

The family members had appealed to producer and actor Namrata Hegde and actors Aravind Bolar, Thamma Lakshman to change the name. J. Narayana Poojary, a relative of Ramappa Poojary, said “Raampanna” was a well-known person who was the first to offer wholesome meals at Rs. 5.

He was active in politics, social and religious fields. Using his name in the film could further project him in poor light, and hence, the appeal to change the name to which the film team had consented, he said.
