Many cooperative societies in Dakshina Kannada suspended their operations on Saturday as a mark of protest against a proposal to include cooperatives under the ambit of Direct Tax Code. Urban Cooperative Banks supported the protest.
The protest was in response to the call for a nationwide agitation by Sahakara Bharati, a non-governmental organisation, which has been fighting for exclusion of cooperative societies from the tax net. Members and employees of various cooperative societies participated in a meeting held at the Town Hall here on Saturday.
Chairman of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd (CAMPCO) Konkody Padmanabha said bringing cooperative societies under the purview of DTC will be detrimental to the growth of cooperative societies in the State. Making societies pay 33 per cent as tax on the profit would lead to closure of many cooperative societies.

Comments:
Organisation like the Sahakara Bharati who contends that they are a non
governmental organisation should be thoroughly investigated by the Home
Ministry, Govt.of India , with regards to their links to the RSS & HINDU
right wing like Hindu Munnani etc.
It would be reasonable to assume that these organisation are likely to
have a hand in fueling the growth of Hindu fundamentalists in Mangalore,
Kasargoad and Udipi regions, this can only emerge through proper
investigation by a Spl. team.
