Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxists) staged a protest in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Wednesday condemning the attack on the office of Prajavani, a Kannada daily, in Shimoga on Tuesday.

A group had barged into the office of Prajavani trying to ransack the office and attempting to assault the staff working there. The group reportedly barged into the office to express displeasure over an article on Swami Vivekananda published in the daily.

Addressing a gathering on the occasion, party district committee member Vasantha Achari said “communal forces” were behind the incident. It was an attack on the freedom of the press, he said.

Mr. Achari said such forces fail to understand the ideals of Swami Vivekananda.

He said “communal forces” had become active in Dakshina Kannada (stone throwing incident on the Sullia Police Station and attacking Christians near Surathkal) recently.
