Director of the Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Samshodhana Kendra H. Krishna Bhat said on Thursday that art or painting was one of the best medium which kept negative emotions at bay.

He was speaking after inaugurating an exhibition of paintings by artist Ramesh Chavan, organised by the Karnataka Lalith Kala Academy at the Vibhuti Art Gallery here. Prof. Bhat said that children should be encouraged to take up fine arts. Udupi always encouraged arts and artists.

Renowned artist K.K. Hebbar from Udupi went to Mumbai, studied at the J.J. School of Arts, and became famous.

Well-known artist B.P. Bairy lived in Udupi. Some artists had given up their well-paying jobs to start art schools in the city, Prof. Bhat said. Mr. Chavan welcomed the gathering. Artist Raghavendra Amin compeered the programme. Principal of the Chitrakala College of Arts Rajendra Trasi proposed a vote of thanks. Businessman Ranjan Kalkura was present.

Twenty-seven paintings of Mr. Chavan will be on display at the Vibhuti Art Gallery here till January 29.
