Led by senior Congress leaders and councillors, residents of Valencia and Kankanady blocked the main road near Valencia junction here on Thursday with the body of a man who was killed in an accident on the road on Wednesday.
The residents said the BJP-ruled Mangalore City Corporation was to blame for the death as they had not carried out concretisation of the road properly. The protesters alleged that Conrad Ashok Pashan (42), who was riding pillion on a motorcycle early on Wednesday, fell off after the two-wheeler rider lost balance while trying to negotiate a bad patch of the road.
In an aggressive gesture of dissent, the residents placed the body of the victim at the same spot where he died.
‘Haphazard'
Speaking to the media, local councillor Jecintha Alfred said that the concretisation of the stretch was being conducted in a haphazard manner without providing necessary footpaths and culverts.
“We have repeatedly told officials that the road and its appendages must be built simultaneously. But they have built the road a few feet above the ground level, making it difficult for vehicles to negotiate,” she said.
Congress leader Ivan D'Souza said that he would file a case against the Mayor and the MCC Commissioner.
