D. Ananya of Dakshina Kannada District scoring highest marks in the commerce stream in the second year Pre-University Course examination of 2010-11 has made a difference in her village near Sullia.
Initiative
Her achievement has prompted people at Kemmanaballi to take an initiative to re-open the closed government lower primary school in which she had her early education.
The school was closed last year for lack of quorum and a teacher. The school comes under the jurisdiction of Jalsoor Gram Panchayat.
Ananya did her Pre-University Course at St. Philomena Pre-University College, Puttur.
Then and now
Sullia taluk Block Education Officer Malleswamy said at the district vigilance and monitoring committee meeting that the school had only five children last year.
Hence they were transferred to the nearby Kaddikadka school and the school at Kemmanaballi was closed down. Now, parents of nine children had agreed to send their children to the same school this academic year. It included parents of five students transferred to Kaddikadka school.
Re-opened
Mr. Malleswamy said people in Kemmanaballi wanted that the school be re-opened this year. However, it was yet to be re-opened.
New teachers
Mr. Malleswamy said the department had deputed a teacher each for four lower primary schools in the taluk this year as permanent teachers in those schools had been transferred. .
“The schools at Bhootakallu, Banadkka, Aadikallu, and Kalpatabail now do not have permanent teachers,” he said. Each school did not have more than 20 students. Teachers from nearby schools had been deputed there,” said Mr. Malleswamy, who is in-charge executive officer of Sullia Taluk Panchayat.
