The logo says it all. There is no discussion on syllabus at the Ganith Lok. The topics addressed here include Math Lab (a software), common errors in mathematics, vedic mathematics and other topics raised by students.

The Ganith Lok is the newly formed club of the Government First Grade College in Car Street here that intends to hold a series of lectures, presentations and other activities to generate interest among students in mathematics. The first programme of the club was conducted on August 6 when there was a presentation by Varsha Kulkarni, a software engineer, on Maths Lab software that deals with mathematics teaching.

The idea of starting the club was mooted by Assistant Professors K.B. Mahesh and Jephory Rodrigues. “Like students in other colleges, mathematics is considered a tough subject here too. We are trying to change this mindset and generate interest of students in mathematics,” Mr. Mahesh said.

All the 100-odd students in B.Sc and B.CA courses have been enrolled into the club. Entry to the club is optional for students from BA, B.Com and BBA courses. Principal Rajashekar Hebbar has permitted the club members to hold its activities for an hour every Saturday after the end of the college hours at 12.30 p.m. Mr. Mahesh said the first lecture was received well by students. “We have planned to take students to a nearby private college that is using Math Lab software,” he added.

On the suggestion of students, the club proposes to hold a lecture on “common errors in mathematics” in the next few days. “We have asked students to come out with topics and we will arrange for those lectures,” Mr. Mahesh added.

Apart from lectures and presentation on mathematics, the Ganith Lok would have sessions to train students for bank recruitment examination. “We are hoping to get services of our alumni Akshata, who is now an assistant manager in a Public Sector Bank in Mangaluru,” Mr. Hebbar said.
