If you seen a bar operating beyond the permitted time or a game of chance happening in your locality, you just have to click a photograph and share it with the police control room or send it to Police Commissioner or other police officers for action.

This is among the features of the new mobile app — Mangalore Police — and of the website (www.mangalorepolice.com) of the Mangaluru police. These two applications were launched by the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Om Prakash on Tuesday.

As against the mobile app of Udupi police that allows registration of complaints, the application of the city police has been restricted to sharing of information. Apart from sending pictures, the application allows the user to call the officials concerned and convey information in person.

“Details such as mobile number and GPS coordinates of the sender will be available to the person who receives it,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K. Santosh Babu. Similar feature was available on the website.

The mobile app also provides updates on movement of traffic on various city roads. While clear route will be indicated by one colour, there will moderate, busy and block indicated by other colours. “We will add features of to and fro facility by which the user will get information of alternate routes in case a particular stretch is blocked,” Mr. Babu said.

Forms

Under the “How To and FAQ” section on the website, people can get information of the ways in which a gun licence, permission for processions and for installing music systems in a public place can be obtained. Forms necessary to seek such permissions can be downloaded and submitted to nearby police stations after filling the details, Mr. Babu added.

The mobile application and website have been developed by a city-based software firm. “They have agreed to maintain the two facilities and bring out further changes to make it more people-friendly,” Mr. Babu said.
