Voicing apprehensions over the recent amendments to the Karnataka Police Act, M. Veerappa Moily, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, said here on Sunday that elected representative should not have a say in the transfer of policemen as this would lead to favouritism and favour seeking.
Jain felicitated
Talking at victory celebrations and felicitation of Moodbidri MLA and Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Fisheries K. Abhaychandra Jain, Mr. Moily said that indiscriminate transfers of policemen by the previous government had led to a “corrupt and casteist police force”. He said that a transferred policeman would seek favours from MLAs and vice versa.
Lok Sabha polls
Meanwhile, the Minister attributed the victory of the Congress in the coastal region to the “corrupt, communal, casteist” policies of the BJP government. In the same vein, he expressed confidence that the party would sweep all the three Lok Sabha seats in the Karnataka coast.
Commenting on his own prospects, Mr. Moily said: “I will be standing from the Chikballapura constituency this time alone, and I’m confident my margin of victory will cross 1.4 lakh votes.”
Heaping praise on Mr. Jain, the Union Minister said the MLA, being from the minority Jain community, had proven that it was not necessary for a candidate to be from the majority religion or caste to win.
Mr. Moily urged the MLA and other elected representatives from the twin district to ensure that fertile lands of the region” be used to their full agrarian potential.
