Activists and family members of the 17-year-old girl, who was raped and murdered in Ujire last year, made a fervent appeal demanding Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the incident. The girl was raped and murdered while returning from her college on October 9, 2012. Her body was found in the bushes near Dharmasthala the next day.

“Those demons ate my dear daughter, who I carried for nine long months in my womb. She had not eaten anything on the fateful day as she had an exam. Please help us in catching the real culprits,” said the girl’s mother, chocking with emotion.

Several activists and people from Belthangady joined the Democratic Youth Federation of India activists in a demonstration to press for a CBI inquiry into the case. The activists and victim’s family members joined a vehicle rally from Belthangady to Mangalore where a public meeting was held.

Addressing people, Kerala MP and All India Democratic Women’s Association National vice-president T.N. Seema said more people should raise their voice against the way real offenders in the case were being protected.

In Rajya Sabha

“The police have been smart in protecting persons involved in the girl’s murder,” she said and added that such officers should be held accountable.

Ms. Seema said the government should not underestimate the voice of AIDWA. She said the AIDWA would take a stride forward in raising this issue at the highest level. “I will raise it in the Rajya Sabha. I will also bring this incident to the notice of the Home Minister and Prime Minister.”

AIDWA State vice-president K. Neela said, “This incident is crueller than what happened to the girl (the physiotherapy student) in Delhi.” This incident was among the 104 cases of sexual assault in Dharmasthala that have remained undetected. “If Chief Minister (Siddaramaiah) has concern for women, he should order for a CBI inquiry into these cases,” she said.

B.M. Bhat from the CPI(M) State Secretariat questioned the silence of political parties in the case. He particularly named senior Congress leader B. Janardhana Poojary and asked why he had not demanded a CBI inquiry.
