It’s not only Tulu that you will hear the city police speak. To start with, 31 policemen from the city have undergone a 10-day training programme in speaking Beary.
With the aim to enable the police to better connect with people, Police Commissioner M. Chandra Sekhar recently decided to train policemen from North Karnataka in Tulu.
Two batches
As many as 55 persons from the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate and eight from the Dakshina Kannada police have undergone training in two batches.
Now, 31 policemen who know Tulu have undergone 10-day training in speaking Beary as well.
Both training sessions were organised by University College. The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy provided resource persons for training personnel in Beary. The valedictory function for the first batch of the Beary-speaking training was held at the office of the Police Commissioner on Wednesday.
‘Be men of words’
Speaking at the function, Mr. Sekhar said as police personnel communicate with people regularly, it is important that they speak multiple languages. “We are generally perceived as men of action. Apart from being men of action, we should also be men of words,” he said. He said his knowledge of Kannada, Tamil and Bengali has helped him in his profession.
Kantappa, a head constable from Moodbidri who has undergone Beary-speaking training, said his knowledge helped him while controlling an agitated mob in Bantwal when was on duty in Farangipet a few months ago. “Addressing the people in Beary helped me a lot ,” he said.
B.A. Mohammad Hanif, president of Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy, Uday Kumar, principal of University College, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) M. Shantaraju also spoke.
