Social activist and vice-president of the Dakshina Kannada unit of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties, Kabir Ullal, has alleged that police were harassing him by initiating an inquiry on the basis of a “false” complaint filed against him.
Mr. Ullal told presspersons that the police were conducting an inquiry following a letter sent by Sheik Ishaq to the Director General and Inspector-General of Police Lalrokhuma Pachau in October.
In the complaint, Mr. Ishaq has accused Mr. Ullal of links with Maoists, terrorist organisations. In the same complaint, he has accused Mr. Ullal of filing false cases against Deputy Superintendent of Police Jayant Shetty, inspector Venkatesh Prasanna and sub-inspector Shivaprakash. Mr. Ullal alleged that the complaint against him had been filed at the behest of the police officers against whom he had filed cases. He had filed a private complaint accusing Mr. Shetty and Mr. Shivaprakash of hoisting a criminal case and arresting him. He has sought information under the Right to Information Act seeking details about police encounters that Mr. Prasanna was involved in. He has written to higher officials about the threats to his life from sub-inspector Shyam Sunder, Mr. Ullal said.
Mr. Ullal said the complaint against him had come at a time when he was pressing for vacation of the stay ordered by the High Court over the proceedings related to his private complaint against the four police personnel.
“I find it strange that the inquiry is being done on a complaint where the complainant has not even mentioned his postal address,” Mr. Ullal said.
