Amid sloganeering, the district unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad demanded an inquiry into the suicide of Sarita, a final year B.Com. student of the University College who immolated herself on Sunday morning.

The students' union marched from University College to the office of the Deputy Commissioner and demanded justice for Sarita. The protesters alleged that the student was driven to commit suicide because of sexual harassment by bus conductors.

Her classmate Romi M.V. said that Sarita had complained about the alleged harassment she faced when commuting between college and home in Barebailu near Yeyyadi. But when she was with Sarita, the latter did not face any trouble. ABVP city unit organising secretary Vinay V. Jadhav said that Sarita's death should not be dismissed as suicide. This is a problem faced by most women. After observing a minute's silence to mourn her death, a memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner.
