Despite protests against the ‘day of love’, Valentine’s Day was marked in the city on Friday with little fuss.
There was, however, an attempt at “dissuading” couples at Kadri Park. After protests against the celebration of Valentine’s Day, members of Sri Ram Sene were called to the Park after members reported of having seen a couple there.
Observing a gathering of around eight persons there, two constables were seen by The Hindu photographer asking the couple to vacate the premises before the situation turned violent.
“There was no intention of violence. Our members had just gone there to see what was happening,” said Kumar Malemar, State vice-president of the group.
Though pubs and bar owners refrained from organising special events for Valentine’s Day, pubs, bars, hotels, parks, and beaches were teeming with activity as usual.
With a different take on the Day, Mangalore University Blood Donors Group has started registrations for blood donation on Friday, and the drive will culminate on February 26 with the donation of blood.
ProtestEarlier, members of Sri Ram Sene took up cudgels against the celebration of Valentine’s Day. Protestors gathered in front of Besant College in the city, and burnt greeting cards that marked the day.
Mr. Malemar said the concept was a “western” one and was against the values of Hindu society.
