Most bakers would argue that a cake without eggs is no cake at all. In all likelihood, they would change their mind once they have a bite of the 100 per cent vegetarian cake prepared by the monks at the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
The monks prepared a vegetarian cake weighing 100 kg and displayed it here on Sunday as part of the “go puja” and “Govardhana puja” celebrations at A.B. Shetty Memorial Hall.
Significance
Pankhajahari Dasa, a monk who helped in preparing the cake, said: “Today is the day Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain with his little finger. The cake, which is made to resemble a mountain, is to commemorate it.”
Tradition
In Mathura and Brindavan (Uttar Pradesh), the lifting of the Govardhan mountain had traditionally been celebrated by preparing a replica of the Govardhan mountain with sweets.
“We decided to make this centuries old practice a little different by making a mountain of cake,” he said.
Main cake
The main cake was prepared at the Bangalore centre of the ISKCON. “We brought large chunks of the cake by bus and then put them together over here,” Dasa said.
Arduous task
But the task of assembling, icing, and decorating the cake was arduous and the entire process took over six hours to complete, he added.
