Street vendors continue to occupy footpaths in Mangaluru

January 01, 2017 01:17 am | Updated 01:17 am IST - MANGALURU:

The Mangaluru City Corporation creating a zone for street vendors near the State Bank of India bus terminus has failed to meet the purpose as the vendors continue to occupy footpaths in the central business district area.

Raising the matter at the monthly meeting of the corporation council on Saturday, some councillors asked why the civic body was remaining a mute spectator though the zone was inaugurated a week ago. They said that the vendors continued to occupy footpaths in SBI bus terminus area, Central Market, Government Lady Goschen Hospital areas. They asked why the corporation had not evicted them.

Mayor Harinath said that revenue officials had evicted them on Friday evening. Now the civic body would form a 10-member team for evicting street vendors in the city. It was because officials could not spend their time on it on regular basis as they had other works to attend.

The team would be outsourced and bids had been invited for supplying human resource for the team.

It would go around the city thrice or whenever necessary in a week evicting street vendors. The civic body has asked the vendors to occupy the zone reserved for them. The eviction would continue, he said.
