89 elected unopposed in Dakshina Kannada

Eighty-nine candidates have been elected unopposed to gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada.

They include the nine members of the Kalmadka Gram Panchayat in Sullia taluk, according to information provided by the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Wednesday. In Nellur-Kemraj Gram Panchayat of Sullia taluk, which has eight seats, six candidates have been elected unopposed.

As many as 30 candidates have been elected unopposed to gram panchayats in Bantwal taluk, 27 in Mangalore taluk, 19 in Sullia taluk, seven in Belthangady taluk and six in Puttur taluk.

In Pavoor Gram Panchayat of Mangalore taluk there will be no election for one reserved seat as the candidature of the sole contestant has been rejected owing to insufficient information in the caste certificate.

A total of 200 gram panchayats will go to the polls in the district on May 12 and 7,500 candidates are in the fray. Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj told presspersons here that 3,007 women were contesting the elections.
