54 booths in Maoist-hit areas

In all, 54 election booths in Dakshina Kannada are in Maoist affected areas as 227 gram panchayats are set to go to the polls on May 29.

Stating this at a meeting here on Saturday Sharanappa S.D., Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada, said that the district has 283 hyper-sensitive and 378 sensitive booths. Totally there are 1,212 booths.

Necessary arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful conduct of elections across the district, he said.

Additional Deputy Commissioner A. Sadashiva Prabhu said counting votes of gram panchayats in Mangaluru taluk will be held at the Paduva School, Nantoor. For Bantwal taluk it will be in Infant Jesus English Medium School, Modamkapu, for Belthangady at Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara Pre University College, Ujire; for Puttur at Vivekananda English Medium School, Tenkila and for Sullia it will be at Nehru Memorial College in Sullia.

As many as 7,619 candidates are in the fray for 3,399 seats. Of the candidates, 4,015 are men and 3,604 are women.
