50-year-old woman killed

A 50-year-old woman from Krishnapura died after she came under the wheels of a garbage carrying truck near Sahara Hospital in Thokkottu on the Mangaluru-Kasaragod National Highway on Sunday.

According to Ullal police, Maimuna was the pillion while her son was riding a scooter. The two were returning after attending a wedding of their relative in Kallapu. Near the hospital, the rider encountered a big pothole and lost control over the vehicle. Maimuna lost balance and fell off the vehicle. She then came under the wheels of the truck that was following the scooter. Maimuna died on the spot. The Ullal police have registered a case of negligent driving against the truck driver. Residents expressed their anguish over the poor stretch of the National Highway that is causing problems for motorists.

A student of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) died, while another student, the pillion rider, was injured, when the motorcycle he was driving hit a lamppost here on Sunday. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Udith Jaspal (21), a native of Delhi and student of third year chemical engineering in MIT. The pillion rider was Natasha Alisha Dais (20), a second year student of MIT. Both were returning from Udupi on a motorcycle when Jaspal lost control over the vehicle and it hit the road divider and then a lamppost near Manipal police station. A severely injured Jaspal was rushed to the Kasturba Hospital, where he died. Natasha, who also suffered injuries, is receiving treatment in the hospital. A case had been registered.
