400 delegates attend ‘Manipal Cardiology Update'

The former Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University M.S. Valiathan inaugurated “Manipal Cardiology Update”, a State-level conference on preventive cardiology, here on Tuesday.

Mr. Valiathan said: “Although the diseases are complicated, treatment modalities have become advanced.” Pro-Chancellor of the university H.S. Ballal said it was essential for professionals to update their technical knowledge. Hence conferences such as the present one were essential. Preventive cardiology could help millions of people in attaining better health, he said.

This was significant in a country such as India where 40 per cent of the population lived below the poverty line and another 40 per cent was low middle income families. The proceedings of the conference should be publicised for the benefit of public, Mr. Ballal said. Kasturba Medical College dean P. Sripathi Rao said: “Once people become mature, they turn towards preventive care.” There were discussions on changing sugar control targets in cardiac patients, application of statistics for research in the field of cardiology .
