36 candidates lose deposits in Udipi

As many as 36 candidates have lost their deposits in the elections held to the five Assembly constituencies in Udupi district on Wednesday. Those who forfeited their deposits include some heavyweight candidates such as Kishore Kumar of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Kundapur Assembly constituency, who polled 14,524 votes and Janata Dal (Secular) candidate and former Minister Vasanth V. Salian from Kaup Assembly constituency, who polled 4,327 votes.

23 independents

The candidates who forfeited their deposits include one from the BJP, four from the JD(S), one from the Janata Dal (United), two from the Karnataka Janata Paksha, one from the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), three from the Bahujan Samaj Party, one from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and 23 independent candidates.

A candidate loses the deposit if he or she does not get more than one-sixth of the total votes polled.
