Heavy rain, strong winds cause havoc across Udupi district

Twenty-two schoolchildren were hurt, and 19 houses, a school and a junior college were damaged by heavy rain and strong winds in Udupi district on Thursday.

The total damage caused to properties in the district has been estimated at Rs. 3,67,600. There were reports of sea erosion at Tenka Yermal village.

All the 22 students in a classroom of the Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School in Manipur village suffered injuries when a tree fell on the building. Some students were hurt in the stampede that followed the tree fall. The students were rushed to the District Government Hospital, where 21 with minor injuries were treated and sent home. One student was still in the hospital, said District Surgeon Dayanand Nayak. The damage to the school building is estimated at Rs. 50,000.

Two classrooms of the Government Junior College at Bada village were damaged when a tree fell on it. The damage has been estimated at Rs. 75,000.

Seven houses were damaged in Udupi taluk. The total damage to these houses has been estimated at Rs. 96,600.

According to the Kundapur taluk office, six houses were damaged in the taluk. The total damage has been estimated at Rs. 71,000.

In Karkala taluk, six houses were damaged by rain. According to the Karkala taluk office, the house of Srinivas Acharya at Kasaba village was completely damaged and the loss has been estimated at Rs. 50,000. The damage caused to the other five houses has been estimated at Rs. 25,000.

According to the control room in the Deputy Commissioner's office, Udupi received 39 mm jof rainfall in 24 hours till 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Kundapur and Karkala towns received 28.02 mm and 79.08 mm rainfall respectively.
