For the men in khaki its time to show their sporting talents as a three-day sports meet began for them here on Thursday. The sports meet is being jointly organised by the Mangalore Police Commissionerate and the Dakshina Kannada District police.

Around 200 policemen and ministerial staff have been classified into six teams namely: District Armed Reserve and City Armed Reserve, Mangalore Central, Mangalore North, Mangalore South, Puttur Sub Division, and Women.

The discus throw and shotput events will be held separately for sub-inspectors, inspectors, and assistant commissioners of police and other higher-ranked officers. Athletic events include 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres and 4 x 400-metres relay; personnel from the constabulary ranks will participate in the athletic events. Team events include: volleyball, throwball, tug-of-war, and kabaddi.

A marathon from Pumpwell to the Police Ground will be held on Friday. Policemen across the ranks will participate in this event. Officers will participate in table tennis and badminton matches, a slow-motorcycle race and a shooting competition. While the table tennis and badminton matches will be held at officers club, the shooting competition will be held at the shooting range in Vamanjoor.

Deputy Commissioner N. Prakash inaugurated the event. Mr. Prakash said it was imperative for the police personnel to maintain a healthy body, which was necessary for a healthy mind, so that they could discharge their duties effectively. Mangalore Police Commissioner Manish Kharbikar and Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal took part in the function.

The programme started with a march by members of the six teams, who sported different colour t-shirts. Last year’s sports meet champion Radhakrishna brought the torch to the police grounds, the venue for most of the events.
