A 12-year-old girl died after falling into an abandoned well in Bejai on Tuesday. The fire and emergency services personnel faced difficulty while entering the well to bring out the body as it was filled with toxic gases.

Savita (12) was playing with her friends in the area of an abandoned house adjoining the house where she lived.

According to Beeresh (12), who was among the children playing there, Savita was seen going towards the well. “We ran towards the well hearing her call of rescue. I saw her holding on to a stick in the well. She then fell further down into the water”, said Beeresh.

Beeresh and his friends called people for help, who immediately called the Police and Fire and Emergency Services.

The Fire and Emergency Services personnel had a tough time searching for Savita who was said to be on the bed of the well that was 60-foot below. The water that was around 10-foot high, was toxic as it was filled with waste material. The body was removed around 3 p.m.

Savita is the elder daughter of labourers Parasappa R. Koti and Lingamma, from Lingapur village of Bagalakote District. Savita’s father had been to a temple in Kadri while her mother had been to work at a construction site at the time of accident, the police said.
