The MCC Commissioner has given Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt. Ltd., a week to comply with the order.

Mangaluru City Corporation will stop payment to Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt. Ltd., which is handling the solid waste produced in the city, if it did not insist on people handing over only segregated waste to its garbage collectors within a week, according to Mohammed Nazir, Commissioner of the corporation.

Stating this at the monthly meeting of the corporation council on Saturday, the commissioner claimed that the civic body has done enough awareness campaign on waste segregation at source.

Through advertisements it had asked people to hand over segregated waste to the garbage collectors. But the company is not insisting that people hand over dry and wet waste separately.

As a result, people have been handing over mixed garbage.

It is the responsibility of the company to insist that people separate waste and collect only segregated waste. If the company does not fall in line within a week, the civic body will stop monthly payment to it, the commissioner warned.

The civic body was paying Rs. 1.98 crore every month to the company for handling the solid waste management, including collection and transportation of garbage, street sweeping, weed cutting, divider cleaning, of the city.

Mr. Nazir said that the civic body is also contemplating to collect the bulk waste produced in the city on its own by taking it from out of the purview of the company to earn some profit for the corporation.

Some councillors alleged that over the past week, foul smell has been emanating from the garbage dumping yard at Pachchanady.

They said that it was unbearable and was spreading to Yeyyadi, Shakthi Nagara, Kavoor and Pachchanady areas.

Replying to it, an environment engineer said that it was because the chicken waste burial pit at the yard had been dug up for constructing a peripheral concrete road to the yard. The foul smell is the result of its exposure to air. Enzymes and calcium liquid had been sprayed to contain the smell. Now it has been reduced. Once the road covered the pit area completely the smell would stop and the process of laying the road was under progress.
