A young couple were found dead under mysterious circumstances near Poikaikaraipatti here on Sunday.
Madurai district police said that following a complaint from Pandi of Mangalakudi near Othakadai that his 16-year-old daughter was missing since four days, a case was registered.
Inquiries revealed that the girl, who was studying plus-one in a local government school, had an affair with her own relative Babu (25) of the same locality. Since the families objected to the marriage, it could not be conducted.
However, the girl and Babu had decided to get married and left home on July 26.
Police said, they had gone to Palani and got married in a temple.
After returning to Madurai, the couple had consumed poison and ended their lives, a senior police officer, who investigated the case, said.
Cases filed against outfit
The Thideer Nagar police registered cases against a Muslim outfit — Al Mohideen Force (AMF) and a few of its office-bearers on Sunday.
Based on a complaint from a few Muslim residents from Thideer Nagar, the police personnel conducted investigations.
According to complainants, the letters signed under the banner of AMF had threatened to eliminate those Muslims who acted as informers to police.
