Corporation Mayor V.V.Rajan Chellappa has announced that cleaning and civil works related to storm water drain channels passing through the city will be completed by March.

He instructed the officials to speed up the cleaning works and see that the drains were put to use in phases as and when they were ready.

The Mayor along with Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan and senior officials inspected the final works being carried out at storm water drain in Villapuram on Wednesday.

“Eleven storm water drain channels covering a total length of 59 kilometres are being spruced up in Madurai and suburbs at a cost of Rs. 950 crore. Construction and cleaning of the drains were taken up with the Rs.250-crore fund allotted by the State government,” he said.

As a top priority, three water channels at Villapuram, Kosakulam and Bibikulam would get immediate attention and the lining works there would be completed in one month.

JNNURM funds

The Mayor said that funds obtained from Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission were being utilised for completing 11 storm water drain works. They were Kiruthamal channel, Avaniapuram channel, Panaiyur channel, Pudur channel, Anuppanadi channel, Chinthamani channel, Sottathatti channel, B.B. Kulam channel, Managiri channel, Villapuram channel and Thandalai channel.

Dustbins would be placed along the channel areas so that public would not dump garbage or waste into the water channel in their area, Mr. Chellappa said.
