A public appeal has been made for inclusion of women in all spheres on an equal basis as their male counterparts as they are valuable human resources for nation-building.
Charting out a path for women’s education, empowerment and entrepreneurship, the Vice-Chairperson of Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE), Cynthia Pandian, said that it is imperative for women to be included in all aspects of the development process.
She was delivering the convocation address at the 21st convocation of Mother Teresa Women’s University here on Thursday.
“Higher education institutions need to provide sufficient resources that help women to choose and study what is suitable for them.
Also, women must enrol for higher education in greater numbers by realising that education propels them to achieve larger interests,” she said.
“There is a huge deficiency in the number of women in areas such as scientific research and entrepreneurship. Their active participation is crucial to our nation’s financial growth,” she pointed out.
P.Palaniappan, Minister for Higher Education, said that the State Government is committed to creating good opportunities for women to excel.
The Minister observed that the enrolment of women in higher education is only 9.22 per cent and it must be increased through sustained efforts. K. Rosaiah, Governor, presided over the convocation and gave away degrees/medals to candidates who graduated from the varsity.
Earlier, the university Vice-Chancellor K.Manimekalai in her welcome address had touched upon various academic and administrative initiatives being taken for the benefit of students.
In total, 11,715 candidates received their degrees and diplomas at the convocation. Apurva Varma, Higher Education Secretary, V.V.Rajan Chellappa, Madurai Corporation Mayor, Anshul Mishra, Collector and N.Kala, varsity Registrar, participated.
