The kidneys and corneas of a brain-dead woman were harvested at Meenakshi Mission Hospital here on Thursday night for transplantation.
The 52-year-old K. Ponnuthai, who was suffering from asthma and high blood pressure, was on ventilator support at the hospital after she fainted at her home in Gandhi Nagar here.
Doctors found that blood supply to her brain had stopped due to several blocks in blood vessels but her kidneys and eyes were normal. Her husband Krishnan, an electrician, and family members were counselled to donate the kidneys and eyes of the brain-dead patient.
A 20-member team of doctors, led by K. Sampathkumar, Head, Department of Nephrology, harvested the kidneys and transplanted them on two patients undergoing treatment at the hospital. The corneas were handed over to the eye bank of Aravind Eye Hospital. The approval for cadaver transplant was received from the government within two hours of getting the consent of family members, according to a press release.
