A woman worker, G. Parameswari (55), was charred to death in a fire accident reported at a cracker unit in Puliparaipatti in Vembakottai taluk on Thursday evening.

The condition of three other workers – V. Ponnuthai (50), T. Vasantha (37) and G. Ramalingam – was said to be critical. They had sustained more than 90% burns, said a revenue official. Besides, four more workers sustained burns. “We found Parameswari lying dead when we arrived there,” Sivakasi Station Fire Officer K. Murugan said.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel put out the flames immediately. However, three working sheds were razed to the ground.

While two of the injured were treated as outpatients, others have been admitted to the Government Hospital here.
