A 37-year-old woman Sundaravalli, and her son Karuppasamy, were killed in a road accident at Tirumangalam on Wednesday. Her husband Saravanan has been admitted to the Government Rajaji hospital with serious injuries.

The police said that the couple, hailing from T. Subbulapuram, along with their five-year-old child, were riding on a motorbike for distributing invitations to their relatives for a function.

While entering the service lane on Tirumangalam-Madurai four-way highway, the bike was following a bus near the Kappalur toll gate at around 10 a.m. In his attempt to overtake the bus, Saravanan sped the motorbike that rammed into a stationary lorry on the service lane.

The lorry was parked in front of a flour mill near the Kappalur toll gate, the Inspector of Police (Tirumangalam Town), T. Nagaraj, said.

In the impact, the boy, who was sitting over the petrol tank of the bike, was killed on the spot after his head was crushed.

The couple too sustained serious injuries and they fell unconscious on the road. They were rushed to the Government Rajaji hospital where the woman succumbed at around 4 p.m.

The condition of Saravanan was said to be critical.

The lorry driver, Jothi Basu of Aruppukottai, has been picked up by the police.
