In a daring daylight robbery, two unidentified youths snatched six sovereigns of gold from a woman, Maragadhamuthu (46), at knifepoint while she was working alone in a computer centre on the first floor of a building in Mahalakshmi Nagar.

The robbers gagged her and tied her hands with some clothes and locked the door of the computer centre before fleeing the scene around 1.30 p.m.

The woman, wife of a technical assistant in Madurai Corporation, had opened the centre for taking up typing and printing of documents at 4th Street in Mahalakshmi Nagar two months back.

While she was working on her system, two youths, sporting shirts and pants, approached her with a request for downloading some application form.

Even as the woman tried to get clarified about the application form, one of them got to her back and gagged her with his hands.

The other pulled out a knife and threatened to stab her if she raised alarm.

“He later cut my gold chain with the knife. When he tried to remove by ear studs, I signalled to him of volunteering to remove it,” Ms. Maragadhamuthu said.

After taking the jewellery, one of them took a towel and gagged her mouth.

Later, they tied her hands with a cloth and fastened it with a table and left the spot.

The woman, who managed to wriggle out, alerted a neighbour and sought his help to open the door which was locked from outside.

Senior police officials visited the scene of crime.
