A 27-year-old woman was robbed of two gold chains weighing 12 sovereigns at knifepoint by three youth near Melur on Monday evening.

The police said Mamathi and her mother, Malaieswari (50) were returning home after attending a function at their relative’s place in Othapatti on a moped.

When they were crossing Mattangipatti on the Tiruppathur Road, the robber knocked their two-wheeler with the bike at around 2.30 p.m.

Both the mother and daughter fell down on the road. Even before they could realise what was happening, one of the three robbers pulled out a knife and went closer to them.

Ms.Mamathi volunteered to give all her three chains. However, she suddenly realised that she had handed them her ‘thali’ chain too.

The police said the robbers returned her ‘thali’ chain when she pleaded with them.

Their bike had a “for registration” sticker.

Hearing the alarm raised by the women, a few persons chased the trio on two-wheelers for about 10 kilometres but they escaped.
