A robber dispossessed a woman of five sovereigns of gold despite a brave fight put up by her, and managed to escape from the victim and onlookers by brandishing a knife at Avaniapuram here on Thursday.

The police said the robber had stopped his bike and tried to snatch the seven-sovereign chain of R. Seeniammal (49), who was returning home after buying vegetables.

However, Seeniammal grasped his shirt collar with one hand and held her chain tightly with another. In the melee, both fell down on the road.

As the woman raised an alarm, Murugesan, a local resident, rushed to the spot. Without ascertaining what had happened, he voluntarily lifted the two-wheeler that had fallen on its side. Before Murugesan could realise what was happening, the culprit pulled out a knife and threatened them and others, who had by then gathered at the spot.

He then slowly pushed his motorcycle to some distance, started it and sped away with the five sovereigns he managed to yank from the woman’s chain.
