A 53-year-old woman, K. Pandimadevi, was relieved of her two chains at Athikulam on Friday.
The woman was returning home after visiting the Mariamman Temple in the Armed Reserve Ground. When she was walking on Nehru Street, a youth followed her and snatched two chains — 11 sovereigns and four sovereigns each — at around 1.15 p.m.
Even before she could raise an alarm, he escaped in a waiting two-wheeler.
In another incident, S. Dinesh Babu (30) of Vadipatti lost three-and-a-half sovereign gold and Rs. 49,000 cash kept in the box of his two-wheeler at East Veli Street on Thursday. Dinesh Babu had gone to Alanganallur to pledge the gold at a bank. The bank officials had asked him to come on Friday. On the way back, he had come to a transport office in the city and had left his motorcycle on East Veli Street. On his return, he found the valuables missing from the box.
