Woman kills two children, ends life by jumping into tank

April 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - Madurai:

A 35-year-old woman, Madeswari, is said to have committed suicide after killing two children near Tirupparankundram here on Tuesday night.

Police said that the frequent quarrels with her husband, Pannerselvam, a welder of J.J. Nagar in Nilayur, who was an alcoholic, led the woman to take the extreme step. It was the second marriage for both Pannerselvam and Madeswari.

While Pannerselvam’s first wife had died, Madeswari had got out-of-court divorce from her first husband. The woman had been working as a temporary staff in a ration shop for the last one month.

Following a quarrel on Tuesday night, Madeswari took her daughter Amirthavarshini (3), and Harini (8), daughter born to Pannerselvam’s first wife, out around 10 p.m. and threw them into Panakulam tank in Nilayur before jumping into it, Tirupparankundram Inspector of Police A. Soorakumaran said.

Local people had noticed two bodies – those of Madeswari and Amirthavarshini – floating in the water on Wednesday morning and alerted the police. The Fire and Rescue Services personnel made a thorough search of the huge tank till noon and fished out the body of Harini, Station Fire Officer (Madurai) N. Suresh Kannan said.

Tirupparankundram police have registered a case of suicide. An RDO enquiry has been ordered into the incident as Pannerselvam and Madeswari had got married only in 2011.

The police have picked up Pannerselvam for questioning.
